Job Summary

The Mortgage Banker proactively solicits new consumer mortgage business and originates a high-quality loan for the Bank’s portfolio that meets both compliance standards and established production goals.  Compensation will be a salary plus commissions based on funded loans.

Key Functions:

 

  1. Creates a client-focused and employee-friendly environment that fosters communication and teamwork by providing exemplary service and experience, including managing direct reports to maintain efficient, high-quality performance.
  2. Originates consumer residential mortgage Loans and maintains the integrity of Wafd Bank’s interests in all lending activities.
    • Originates loans by completing loan applications interviews with prospective clients and discussing loan options to best meet clients’ needs.
    • Collects, documents and analyzes financial and related data in order to determine the general credit worthiness of the prospect and the merits of the specific loan request.
    • Complies with laws, rules and regulations, avoiding any real or perceived conflicts of interest.
    • Applies proper pricing and mitigates risk with additional pricing when appropriate.
    • Maintains a portfolio of industry contacts that consistently contribute to the overall monthly production of the Division and meets the expectations set by Management.
    • Develops and maintains close working relationship with assigned branches to develop and build deposit relationships with new mortgage clients.
    • Refers any commercial, small business, deposit and HELOC business to assigned network of branches or as appropriate within the Bank.
    • Performs property inspections as neede
    • Other duties deemed necessary in order to deliver products or services in a quality client experience to the prospect, current client, and other Bank colleagues.
  3. Build cross referral business with Retail, Commercial and Community Banking group.
    • Proactively works with Retail branch colleagues to deepen client relationships and acquire personal deposits and primary transaction accounts to meet specific expectations.
    • Share lists of area builders with commercial peers for promotion of the Bank’s All-in-One and spec construction products and may be assigned to originate Small Builder Loans.
    • Promote mortgage loans for buyers of the group builder’s spec homes via the Bank’s Builder Special program.
  4. Promotes Wafd Bank within the community.
    • Proactively seeks new business relationships.
    • Maintains current information regarding competitor’s fees, and pricing.
    • Uses competitor information to promote the advantages of WaFd Bank products to prospective clients.
  5. Adherence to bank policies and procedures designed to comply with Federal regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, USA Patriot Act and OFAC regulations.
  6. Other duties assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Skills/Training: 

  • Minimum two years college or three years banking or mortgage lending experience.
  • Effective business development/client acquisition skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Must also be able to work effectively with the public, in person, by phone, email or in video conferencing, in a personable, professional manner, and handle pressure in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Individual must be a self starter, experienced with working in a team and individual sales environment, and have a strong track record in achieving sales results.
  • Must be self-motivated and production-oriented.
  • Computer proficiency with Encompass loan origination platform and Microsoft Office 365 applications (e.g. Teams, Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.

Experience: 

  • Minimum three years mortgage lending experience required with demonstrated success as a mortgage originator, including a strong understanding/working knowledge of lending terminology, loan processing, loan documentation and lending procedures.
  • Financial industry or banking experience preferred.
